If you had to recommend just one book to read on the topic of spirituality then what would it be? Just what is the best book on spirituality? For me there is only one answer: “Conversations with God” by Neale Donald Walsch. Here is why maybe you should read it.
How I Came To this Book
Firstly, by way of some background, I first read these books years ago and absolutely loved them. I remember how I came across it: someone made a throw-away remark on a TV talk show. They said how the book had “changed their perspective on life for ever”. For some reason this really caught my attention and moved me to buy the books. Just first few pages alone had such a profound impact on me that I kept having to re-read them. I realised that there was so much to take in – it was hard to wrap my head around it all!
Now that I am working as a healer and therapist, I always ask new clients if they’ve read it. For me it’s the perfect introduction for them to the topic of spirituality. I am also re-reading them and finding new insights as I do this. As soon as I finish I think I will start again as I know there is more to take in. For me, it’s my “if you read one book on spirituality” choice.
How It Was Written
The author found himself once again frustrated with his life. In desperation he wrote on a yellow legal pad “Oh God, why is my life such a mess?”. To his surprise, after writing that he found that his hand was still poised. Then of its own accord it wrote out the reply “Do you really want me to answer that?”. What followed was a dialogue, channel by this automatic writing process between the Neale and God herself. This gradually unfolded into a trilogy of books. The first deals with personal truths, the second with global truths and the third with universal truths.
The Best Book on Spirituality?
So why do I think that it is so good? Well for starters, you can’t get a more authoratitive source for the content! Then, as an explanation of what spirituality is and how the universe works from a spiritual point of view it is second to none. It is written in a very simple style in a way that is very accessible and understandable. There’s none of the “look at me I’m so mystical” aspect that some books on spirituality have. There’s no agenda, it’s just straight-forward, very accessible and down to earth.
You don’t have to buy into everything all at once. There are some really profound concepts in there which are really worth taking to heart. For example, let me just start with “how do you know if something is real or not?”. The book talks about how God is communicating constantly with us all the time. Also, how if we look within ourselves at how we feel or think about something then we can usually recognise this Truth when we come across it. Indeed, the feeling of resonance within oneself that they go on to talk about is totally what happens to me when I read this book. It just “feels true” on a really profound level, in a way that I recognise deeply within myself and which I cannot deny.
Topics Covered
So what topics do the three basic books cover? Everything really! How we have creative powers through our thoughts; why we are here, what is the difference between spirituality and religion (and the flaws with the latter from a spiritual point of view), why is our planet in the state that it’s in, what happens when we die and is there life out there on other planets to name just a few. In fact, to borrow from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy it could be summed up as “the meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything”. In general the answers are understandable and straight-forward, or at least presented in as straight-forward and understandable a manner as is possible when projected into the 3-D world in a way that we can wrap our head around.
Should You Read it?
So who should read this book? Anyone who is on the spiritual path should definitely read it if they have not yet done so. Even if you have already done so, you will benefit from a re-read. If after reading this post you feel moved to read it then listen to that nudge! It’s the Universe telling you what to do! For me it is the best book on spirituality there is.
